Ok, so
you’ve found it on the chart and punched the coordinates
into your GPS, but a little knowledge of the area never
goes amiss!
The
airfield lies just to the north of the east-west A303 about ten
miles south west of Basingstoke. To the south of the A303 is a
fairly large and dense wooded area, which stands out
well on even the haziest of days. To the east of the
field is a service station and on the western edge of the field are
three hangars and a water tower in the north west
corner. A small white shooting tower lies just to the
northwest of the field and nearer to the runway are some
grain silos. There are no formal visual reporting points
but the villages of Overton and Whitchurch are good
feature for traffic arriving from the north and
northwest, Bullington Cross (junction of the A34 and
A303) to the West, Alresford to the South, and Alton to
the South East. Also to the north of Overton is Kingsclere mast
which is 500ft agl. stands out well.
The junction of the
east-west A303 and north/south A34
is known as Bullington Cross and is a good reference
point for traffic from the west as it also conveniently
marks the eastern edge of the Middle Wallop CMATZ stub.
Traffic arriving from the east will easily see
Basingstoke and the “split” of the M3 and A303.
Finally, from the southeast, the town of New Alresford
stands out well with the small lake on its north eastern
fringe.
Due to Popham
being a little remote, if you require a taxi it is advisable to call a taxi
from the relevant area nearest to your destination
direction. If arriving by air, we can call for you
if you give us an accurate ETA and number of passengers.
If not previously booked, it could take a taxi around
30-40 minutes to get to us. Please note,
we are NOT a Taxi company!
The nearest
rail connection is Micheldever Station (about a twenty
minute walk) with hourly trains to Waterloo and
Winchester / Southampton. If you call us when
inbound we can call taxi for you. These have to
come from either Winchester or Basingstoke so we can
call the appropriate company relevant to your needs.
We can also advise of limited local B&B accommodation
(see below).

Where is it
by Road? - For all you Plane Spotters!

|
|
The
airfield lies directly on the north side of the A303
dual carriageway which runs roughly east-west about ten miles
south west of Basingstoke in
Hampshire.
From
Basingstoke
- take the M3 southbound. At Junction 8, turn off
on the A303 towards Andover and the South West.
Climb the hill on the dual carriageway and as you pass
Popham Services (Little Chef & BP on left side, Little
Chef & Esso on right side) you should be able to see the
big orange airfield windsock on the other side of the
dual carriageway. Continue to about 1/2 mile and
take the next exit left signed Micheldever Station &
Overton. Drop down to the bottom, turn right under
the A303 bridge, turn immediately right again as if
rejoining the A303 towards Basingstoke. This is a
two-way
slip road and the airfield entrance brick
and iron gates at the top of the
rise on your left just
100 meters before you rejoin the A303.
[Map]
From
Andover
- Take the A303 eastbound. Note when you cross the
junction of the A34 (Bullington Cross) and stay on the
A303. Discount one very small road on the left (to
Norton), continue to the second main exit marked with
countdown boards, signed Micheldever Station AND
Overton. Drop down the
slip road, and at the end go straight on as as if
rejoining the
A303 towards Basingstoke (this requires a little wiggle
right and left) but the slip road is now signposted
Popham Airfield. You will see the brick and iron gates
of the airfield on the left, just 100 metres before
rejoining the A303.
[Map]
From
Newbury
- Travel south on the A34. Pass Whitchurch. Turn left on the A303
eastbound towards Basingstoke (Bullington Cross).
Follow latter part of Andover direction as above.
[Map]
From
Winchester
- Take the A34 northbound. Turn right on the A303
eastbound towards Basingstoke (Bullington Cross).
Follow latter part of Andover direction as above.

Can I
get there by Rail?
The nearest
rail connection is Micheldever Station (about a twenty-five
minute walk) with
hourly trains
from Waterloo and Winchester or Southampton. Exit
via the tunnel (n.b.
not the front entrance) out of
the station and continue up New Road to the "T"
junction. Turn left and continue about 1/2 mile
until you go under the A303. Turn right up the
slip road (towards Basingstoke) and after about 1/3 mile
the airfield entrance is
at the top of the rise on your left.
