Aero-Modeller Flying

Aeromodelling at Popham

Radio controlled aero-model flying at The Spitfire Flying Club originated many years ago under the auspices of John Greenaway. At that time, model flying at Popham was a hobby enjoyed by only a few full size aircraft members.

Model flying developed under John’s tutelage over a period of five years and an aero-modeller category of Spitfire Flying Club membership was set up for most forms of the hobby, including a dedicated Drone Zone facility.

Before John sadly passed away in 2019, Popham Aeromodeller Group was founded and became affiliated to the BMFA.

MEMBERSHIP

Spitfire Flying Club (Aero-Modeller) and Drone Zone fees can be found in the Membership section. You are required to possess and submit a copy of current BMFA Membership together with CAA Operator ID or exemptions when applying for membership of the Aero-Modeller section.

If you’re interested in learning to fly your own model aircraft, you are welcome to attend as an invited guest for three ‘taster’ lessons from volunteer members prior to joining the Spitfire Flying Club.

In order to fly, you will need:

  • An appropriate model;
  • Valid and current model flying insurance;
  • A transmitter with a ‘buddy’ lead connected to a compatible unit of your own or that of the volunteer member (seek advice).

Should you wish to progress and attain BMFA Achievement Awards, we enjoy the services of Club Instructors and Examiners.

The private Facebook group for Popham Aeromodellers is for members who like to keep in touch and ask questions. It also provides a useful medium for dissemination of information.
